The climatic chamber, also known as test chamber, moisture chamber or environmental chamber, is used to perform life and stability tests in the cosmetic industry. It is a team that allows evaluating the response of different types of samples to different environmental conditions.

There are different models and sizes of climatic chambers, according to the use that will be given to it. They can also be equipped with various devices, allowing to increase the range of climate parameters, for testing.

All climate chambers are isolated environments, in which temperature and humidity index can be controlled within the ranges established for each test. Climatic chambers are important within the cosmetic industry, due to the need of this sector, to perform stability tests to their products.

Why is a stability test necessary for cosmetic products?

The growth and innovation in the cosmetics sector, are driven by consumer preference and in recent years, the public has been inclined towards the use of natural products, formulated from plants and other organic elements.

The satisfaction of this growing demand is based on the manufacture of stable, consistent and safe products in terms of texture, odor, packaging and overall appearance. In order to meet consumers’ expectations, it is desirable that products have a long shelf life, withstand the rigors of transport and thorough use by the consumer.

To ensure these aspects, rigorous product stability assessments are required. These tests have two objectives; the first is to ensure the safety of the consumer, particularly because of the existence in the consumer public, of various levels of sensitivity to the products. The second objective of the tests is to ensure the consistency of the product.

The cosmetic industry, by means of stability tests, ensures the maintenance of the physical, chemical and microbiological quality, intended for the cosmetic product, as well as its functionality and aesthetics, during storage. These tests are designed to identify factors that may affect the safety of the product.

What is a stability test in cosmetic products?

It consists of a test in which, several samples of the formula or product to be evaluated, are placed in different temperature and humidity environments, for a given period of time, in order to simulate the environmental conditions that can affect the integrity of the product, during its life cycle. Then, at selected intervals, the physical, chemical and yield characteristics of the samples are evaluated and the presence of changes or not is verified.

During stability tests, organoleptic properties, such as color, odor and appearance, physicochemical properties, such as pH value, viscosity and density, microbiological stability, including microbial count and challenge of the preservation system, and compatibility testing, are evaluated, evaluating the compatibility between the container and the content. Likewise, the stability of containers and packaging is evaluated.

There are also accelerated stability tests, in which the product is subjected to more severe conditions than usual. It is a predictive study that has a duration of approximately 90 days and that allows to estimate the expiration date of the product.
